Hey Everybody! Here is another great episode of White Noise for your enjoyment. Recorded on a sunny Thursday afternoon, it is the perfect episode to bring you into the May 24 long weekend.
Hey everybody! I have another great episode of White Noise for your ears. Tons of great music from the Podsafe Music Network. Check out this weeks Sellaband artist Civilized Tears at http://www.sellaband.com/civilized-tears.
The show is back in full swing. Great Music on this week’s show from the Podsafe Music Network and music from an artist at sellaband.com the indie artist financing site. Friday will also be the new permanent release day for the show. Please note that I got the name of one of the bands wrong, the song Dip To The Bottom is by QBall not Black Pig as I had said on the show.
Unfortunately a problem with the recording of what was supposed to be todays show made it unreleasable. I will have to rerecord the show so I have pushed off the release until later in the week. Sorry for dissapointing everyone, stay tuned for the show it’s gonna have some great music on it.
I remember when the Black Eyed Peas were young, different and the greatest thing since sliced bread. Their pop/hip hop mix was something new and different. Since their explosion onto the mainstream with Elephunk and their J.T. featuring single Where is the love, they have had another album, launched the solo career of the number one artist among 11 year old girls, and knocked mainstream music down another notch with the release of the video for their latest single: Boom Boom Pow.
This song is dull, generic and nowhere near as good as anything on Elephunk. But my problem is not with music, I’ll concede that there is probably a market for this crap. My problem lies with the video itself which features some of the most blatant examples of product placement. Throughout the video, clips of the HP TouchSmart are shamelessly and prominently displayed. The first thing you see is a clip of someone choosing to play this song on the HP computer. It has no relevance to the actual video but is simply there to advertise HP. Similarly, the last thing you see is a clip of the TouchSmart telling you it’s the end of the video. Right in the middle of the video, one of the guys who is not Will.I.Am some how makes an HP TV appear with a box-shaped hand gesture while singing the line “I’m on that H D flat”. I hope that that line was not written to accommodate HP but was there to start with and was simply determined to be an appropriate place for HP to stick their swag. On the whole, watching the video made me wonder whether this was the actually video or an extended ad for HP(or someone’s sick joke).
Product placement is not new to Music Videos, but it has been relatively low key up until now. It is not uncommon to see an artists flash their Sony Cellphone, or to drive around in their Ford Car. But this video took it too far and made their product placement a key component of their music video ad. Artists(even mainstream artists) need to remember that what they are doing is art. You may have noticed that the Mona Lisa is not holding a Cell Phone and Rodin’s The Thinker is not sitting in a La-Z-Boy. Even though I’m comparing apples to oranges, both Da Vinci and the Black Eyed Peas call themselves artists and they should both show respect to their own work. Both the song and the video should be sacred and should not exist to sell any product other than the band itself.
Okay so there were a whole bunch of technical problems facing the show but I think the worst is over. It started out with the recording where I was getting choppy sound quality on the songs. I touched up some of them in editing for today’s show and I have a fix for future episodes so I will be able to provide you guys with the best sound quality possible. Next was the need to find a new media host. Since the show is new I’ve been hosting it for free on switchpod.com but they announced that they are shutting down so I was scrambling today for a quick solution. At the moment I am on the internet archive under a creative commons license. I will be looking at inexpensive paid hosting in the future, possibly with lybsin but at the moment that seems a little excessive considering the small audience and so far archive.org has been more than satisfactory. the third issue that I was forced to deal with was problems with feedburner. Feedburner was failing to update no matter what I did, so I decided to stop using it and I am now on the original RSS from this site at http://www.thewhitenoisepodcast.com/?feed=rss2&category_name=podcast. Please unsubscribe to Feedburner and use this instead.
So hopefully I’ve worked out all of my problems and I’ll be able to release next week’s show without a hitch.
Here is the third episode of my new podcast. Lot of great music on today’s show. Took a new approach and went entirely scriptless for the show. Audio quality is a little choppy in certain parts, gonna make sure that everything sounds better next week.
Here is the second episode of my new podcast. It’s still rough and still needs work but i’m slowly ironing out the kinks. Got some really great music this week so check out this episode and tune in next week because its only gonna get better.
This week Kevin Rose sat down with Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor to ask questions put forth by his Digg community. Reznor, who is singlehandedly redefining the business model for the music industry, had some very interesting things to say about being an independent artist. Check out the video below for the full interview.
